Each liter contains: | |
Propylene glycol | 800g |
Choline chloride | 21g |
Cobalt (II) sulfate | 1g |
Propylene glycol acts as a glucose precursor, triggering the production of more glucose from the liver. This will help elevate blood glucose level, assist removal of ketones and accelerate general metabolic function. Propylene glycol is administered to improve the metabolic imbalance which results in ketosis or pregnancy toxemia. It is orally absorbed unchanged and is then metabolized to yield both oxaloacetate (which is essential for the metabolism of acetic and butyric acids) and glucose. Administration of propylene glycol is preferred to glucose as the latter has to be given by parenteral route , as given orally it will ferment in the rumen and exacerbate the ketosis. Propylene glycol has a longer duration of action than glycerol.
Choline enhances fat transport from the liver to assist in fatty acid metabolism. Cobalt sulfate ensures Vitamin B12 production is maintained for carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism and maintenance of appetite.
